Time-decayed User Profile for Second Language Vocabulary Learning System

چکیده
Vocabulary learning is the foundation of second language learning. Many E-learning systems have been developed to help learners to learn vocabulary efficiently. Most of these systems employ Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve to make the review schedule for learners. However, learners are different in learning ability and the review schedule based on Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve may be not fit for every learner. To solve the problem, this paper proposes the timedecayed user profile (TUP) to store the personalized Forgetting Curves for each learner. First, TUP is defined and then two algorithms, TUP Training Data Generation algorithm and TUP updating algorithm, are designed to train TUP. The experimental results show that the proposed time-decayed user profile can model the personalized learning characteristics of learners accurately.

This review surveys research on second language vocabulary teaching and learning since1999. It first considers the distinction between incidental and intentional vocabulary learning.Although learners certainly acquire word knowledge incidentally while engaged in variouslanguage learning activities, more direct and systematic study of vocabulary is also required. There is a discussion of how word...
متن کاملTask-Induced Involvement in L2 Vocabulary Learning: A Case for Listening Comprehension
The study aimed at investigating whether the retention of vocabulary acquired incidentally is dependent upon the amount of task-induced involvement. Immediate and delayed retention of twenty unfamiliar words was examined in three learning tasks( listening comprehension + group discussion, listening comprehension + dictionary checking + summary writing in L1, and listening comprehension + dictio...
متن کاملThe Relationship between First and Second Language Literacy in Writing
This paper explores the ways in which the transfer of assumptions from first language (L1) writing can help the process of writing in second language (L2). In learning second language writing skills, learners have two primary sources from which they construct a second language system: knowledge and skills from first language and input from second language. To investigate the relative impact of ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Mnemonic Key Word Method on Vocabulary Learning and Long Term Retention
Most of the studies on the key word method of second/foreign language vocabulary learning have been based on the evidence from laboratory experiments and have primarily involved the use of English key words to learn the vocabularies of other languages. Furthermore, comparatively quite limited number of such studies is done in authentic classroom contexts. The present study inquired into the eff...
